About
the Town of Vienna
Vienna is an incorporated town in
Fairfax County with a 2000 population of 14,453.
In July of 2005, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Vienna fourth
on its list of the 100 best places to live in the United States.
Vienna METRO is a mass transit rail/subway station and the western
terminus of the Metrorail Orange Line. The Washington & Old Dominion
(W&OD) Railroad Regional Park bike trail cuts through the center of
the town and past the town's newest park the Town Green.
Before Vienna, there was Ayr Hill. An early Scottish settler,
Colonel Charles Broadwater, named his expansive estate after his
family's home in his native Scotland. The name stuck and the farming
community that developed in the area went by Ayr Hill until the
1850s, when the village lured a physician into relocating there by
adopting the name of Vienna, after the doctor's New York hometown.
The W&OD Railroad brought both commerce and Civil War skirmishes to
town.
Traditions, such as the annual Halloween Parade, 4th of July
Celebration and Summer Concerts on the new Town Green help create
and retain a unique "small town" feeling despite the suburban sprawl
that surrounds the town.
